Senator Wiener’s Statement on Religious Liberty Memo Issued by Trump Administration

October 6, 2017

Sacramento – Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) issued the following statement in response to the memo released by Attorney General Jeff Sessions giving guidance to federal agencies on how to protect so-called religious liberty:

“If Donald Trump and Jeff Sessions want to use the phrase ‘religious liberty’ to trample on the rights of millions of LGBT Americans, then they don’t know what liberty means. In the America I know - the America where I came of age as a gay youth - liberty means equal rights for all, regardless of race, gender, religion, and, yes, sexual orientation and gender identity. Apparently, that is not the America the Trump Administration knows or values. Unfortunately for our current President and his spineless enablers in Washington, one thing my LGBT community knows how to do is fight. For decades, we have fought as society has attacked, neglected, and marginalized us, and we have prevailed. We will beat back this bigotry, and any other bigotry that comes spewing out of this White House.”
