Senator Wiener’s Statement Regarding Governor Newsom’s Plan to Lease Seton Medical Center

March 20, 2020

San Francisco - Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) released the following statement regarding Governor Newsom's speech tonight in which he indicated he plans to lease Seton Medical Center in Daly City:

“We got some good news tonight: Governor Newsom indicated that the State plans to lease Seton Medical Center in Daly City to help with the expected surge in hospitalizations due to COVID-19. Seton Medical Center’s prior owners, Verity Health, had announced earlier in March that they planned to close the facility.

“Now is not the time to close a hospital. Because of the COVID-19 crisis, we are in need of more beds for patients, and Seton Medical Center can provide that. This is a hugely important step for the Bay Area’s capacity to support those needing medical help. Seton Medical Center is a pillar of our community, and has a talented staff with much to give during this crisis.

“I applaud Governor Newsom’s decision to keep Seton open, and offer my full support through the transition.”
