Senator Wiener’s Statement on Supreme Court Ruling to Protect LGBTQ Workers

June 15, 2020

Sacramento - Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) released the following statement regarding the Supreme Court’s ruling that discrimination against LGTBQ workers is barred by Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. This ruling is a defeat for the Trump administration, who claimed that this type of discrimination against LGTBQ individuals was not banned by the Civil Rights Act and was legal.

“Today’s Supreme Court ruling is a huge step forward in the fight for equality for the LGBTQ community. No one should ever lose their job because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. This is a watershed moment for our community. We must now build on this win by expanding protections to housing and to all aspects of life. The era of discrimination against the LGBTQ community must end, and it will end.”
