Senators Wiener and Limón’s Join Statement on Failure of SB 467 in Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee

April 13, 2021

SACRAMENTO - Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) and Senator Monique Limón (D-Santa Barbara) released the following statement regarding SB 467. The Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee voted 4-3 against SB 467 (with the bill needing 5 votes to pass), which would ban fracking and other destructive oil extraction methods, as well as require 2,500 buffer zones for oil drilling near homes, schools, and playgrounds.

“While we’re extremely disappointed by the Committee’s rejection of SB 467, we’re inspired by the coalition behind this critical climate and public health measure. Frontline communities of color stood up for their families and against drilling practices that severely harm people’s health, particularly children’s health. And our coalition stood up for the basic but important notions that California should lead on climate action and that permitting massive, destructive oil drilling isn’t consistent with being a climate leader. While we saw this effort defeated today, this issue isn’t going away. We’ll continue to fight for aggressive climate action, against harmful drilling, and for the health of our communities.”
