Senator Wiener’s Bill To Limit Corporate Abuse of Forced Arbitration Passes Senate Judiciary Committee

April 12, 2023

SACRAMENTO – The Senate Judiciary Committee passed Senator Wiener’s bill SB 365, legislation to reign in corporate abuse of their ability to appeal denied motions to compel arbitration. The bill passed 8-2 and heads next to the Senate Appropriations Committee. In response, Senator Wiener issued the following statement:

“I’m grateful to the Committee for siding with consumers, workers, and public entities to advance this important legislation. California’s automatic right of appeal puts consumers, workers, and governments in legal limbo when corporate defendants demand arbitration and then freeze legal proceedings by filing appeals even when those appeals are frivolous. I look forward to moving this important legislation toward passage.”

SB 365 is co-sponsored by Attorney General Bonta, the California Employment Lawyers Association (CELA) and Consumer Attorneys of California (CAOC).
