San Francisco –  Today, Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) legislation to protect sex workers from arrest for sex work after they report a serious and violent crime, such as rape, passed out of the Senate with a 28-10 vote. It will now head to the Assembly where it will be set for a hearing in the coming months.

Sacramento –  Today, the Northern California Carpenters Regional Council, which represents over 35,000 union carpenters throughout Northern California, announced its support for Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) SB 50, the More HOMES Act. SB 50 eliminates hyper-low-density zoning near transit and job centers, thus legalizing apartment buildings and affordable housing in these locations so that more people can live near transit and near where they work. It also reduces or eliminates minimum parking requirements for new developments.

San Francisco— Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) issued the following statement in response to today’s synagogue shooting in San Diego County:  

"Six months to the day after the Tree of Life synagogue massacre, we see another brutal synagogue shooting in San Diego County. As we mourn, let’s recommit to end the hate violence against the Jewish community and all communities currently gripping our nation. This is not who we are."

San Francisco –  Today, Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) Senate Bill 50 — the More HOMES Act (Housing, Opportunity, Mobility, Equity, and Stability) — cleared the Senate Governance and Finance Committee, with a vote of 6-1. It will now head to the Appropriations Committee for a vote.

San Francisco –  Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) was joined by San Francisco African American community leaders and HIV advocates to condemn a false and offensive ad campaign sponsored by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), which attacks Senator Wiener’s housing bill, Senate Bill 50. SB 50 legalizes more housing near public transportation and jobs, while protecting existing residents from displacement.

“We welcome immigrants to San Francisco with open arms. Given that immigrants built this country, make our communities better places, and are coming here to work hard, start businesses, and raise their families, this temper tantrum by the President isn’t a punishment—it’s a benefit”

Sacramento–  Today, Senator Scott Wiener’s (D-San Francisco) Senate Bill 145, which ends blatant discrimination against LGBT youth regarding California’s sex offender registry, passed the Senate Public Safety Committee by a 6-0 vote.
