San Francisco –  Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) announced the introduction of Senate Bill 50: the More HOMES Act (Housing, Opportunity, Mobility, Equity, and Stability). SB 50 creates new zoning standards for the construction of housing near job centers and public transportation, while protecting against the displacement of renters and vulnerable communities living in those areas.

Sacramento– Today, Senators Ben Allen (D - Santa Monica) and Scott Wiener (D- San Francisco) introduced legislation to repeal article 34 of the California Constitution, Mayor Eric Garcetti and the City of Los Angeles are sponsoring the legislation. Originally added in 1950, Article 34 requires cities to submit projects to a voter referendum when public funds are allocated to developing low-income rental housing. In the decades since its passage, cities have been forced to comply with a web of regulatory requirements and costly elections to build affordable housing.

San Francisco –  Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) announced his intent to re-introduce a bill to exempt compassionate care programs from paying state commercial cannabis taxes when they are providing free medical cannabis to financially disadvantaged people living with serious health conditions. This bill is modeled off of Senator Wiener’s SB 829, which was vetoed by Governor Brown in September.

San Francisco –  Today Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) announced that when the Legislature convenes on December 3, he will introduce a bill, sponsored by San Francisco District Attorney George Gascón, to close a loophole that hampers prosecutions for automobile break-ins. The bill is modeled on Senator Wiener’s SB 916, which he introduced in 2018, but which did not pass.

 “Our transgender brothers and sisters face alarming rates of violence. The murder rate of trans women of color is off the charts, and trans kids are taking their own lives. As our President tries to erase trans people, let’s remember those who have perished and recommit to ending anti-trans violence and stigma.”
