Internship

Senator Wiener District Internships

Senator Scott Wiener, representing California’s 11th District, seeks enthusiastic, inquisitive, and dedicated college students and recent college graduates for our District Internship Program. Senator Wiener is a champion for issues affecting everyday Californians, and has continuously led the fight to tackle our housing crisis, foundationally restructure our environment, transportation, criminal justice, and healthcare systems, and amplify the voices of the LGBTQ community.

Our internship program offers a unique opportunity to learn about the functions of state government, and the work that the Senator is doing for the City and County of San Francisco, Daly City, Colma, Broadmoor, South San Francisco, and the State of California. Interns will have the opportunity to work directly assisting constituents, helping District Office staff, learning skills specific to working in the office of an elected official, and more. Candidates from historically disenfranchised backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Candidate Requirements:

  • A passion for public service, politics, and community work
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, both written and oral
  • An ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Highly detail-oriented and a willingness to adapt to new tasks
  • High level of professionalism when communicating via email, phone, and in person
  • Ability to come to the District Office to perform internship duties
  • Experience with Word, Excel, and Google Suite
  • Proficiency in Cantonese, Mandarin, Spanish, or Tagalog desired but not required

Intern Responsibilities:

  • Assisting constituents directly via email, phone, and in person
  • Researching and drafting responses for constituent correspondence
  • Conducting policy research on issue areas of interest
  • Office administrative support including, greeting constituents, answering phones, data entry, and organizing press clips

There are limited opportunities for paid internships. All paid internships require that you perform your intern duties in the District Office for the required amount of hours per week. Interns who receive class credit as part of their internship will not be offered a paid position.  During the school year (fall and spring cohorts) schedules remain flexible and interns are required to commit to 10-15 hours per week. During the summer, interns are required to commit 15+ hours per week.

All internship positions are part-time, no full-time positions are available in any cohort (Fall, Spring, Summer). Paid position compensation is $20/hr. No benefits are provided with this classification. Proof of COVID vaccination is required as a condition of employment.

Applications for the Summer 2023 Cohort have closed and the applications for the Fall 2023 Cohort will open in late June.

If you are interested in any upcoming intern cohorts, please complete the following Google Form to be notified: bit.ly/sd11-interest
