Senator Wiener’s Statement on Hate Crime Charges Based on Antisemitic Assault in San Francisco
SACRAMENTO – San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins announced her office will bring hate crime charges in the case of an assault that occurred in San Francisco Friday morning. Senator Wiener issued the following statement in response:
“This violent antisemitic hate crime assault in the Marina — attacking Jews and screaming “fuck the Jews” — is terrifying. Antisemitism is on the rise in the U.S., and San Francisco is no exception. In recent weeks, Jews were set on fire in Colorado, an American Jew and Israeli Christian were shot and killed while leaving a Jewish community event in DC, and a Jewish-owned business in the Mission was horribly vandalized with antisemitic graffiti.
“Antisemitism on both left and right is deadly real. It happens in small ways and large, in our schools and universities, in the workplace, on social media, in public meetings, and in community spaces. The daily antisemitic statements and actions we see — demonizing Jews, holding Jews to unique standards, and promoting anti-Jewish stereotypes and conspiracy theories — inevitably lead to violence, and we are seeing that play out in San Francisco and around the country.
“I commend District Attorney Jenkins and the San Francisco Police Department for their quick work apprehending and charging the perpetrators and sticking up for the safety of our Jewish community.”
