Senator Wiener on Trump and Bukele’s Despicable Refusal to Return U.S. Legal Resident Kilmar Abrego Garcia

SACRAMENTO –  After President Trump willfully ignored the Supreme Court’s order to return Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a legal U.S. resident whom Trump’s government illegally disappeared to an El Salvadoran gulag, El Salvador President Nayib Bukele refused to return Abrego Garcia to the United States.

Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) responded to the disgusting Oval Office colloquy between Trump and Bukele and the constitutional crisis it triggers:

“We’re now deep in the red zone for our constitution and our democracy.

“They disappeared a lawful resident to a prison concentration camp in El Salvador. The courts ordered his return. They refused, with the bullshit claim that they have no power to force President Bukele of El Salvador to do so. Today, Bukele visited the White House & — sitting right next to Trump — said he can’t send our lawful resident back because it would mean smuggling him into the U.S. Trump just sat there & didn’t say “hey, of course we’ll let you bring him back.”

“If this sick, twisted game holds — if the courts don’t stop them, if we don’t stop them — they can disappear anyone. For any reason. No due process. Permanently.

“This isn’t just about non-citizens. Trump is openly talking to Bukele about sending American citizens to El Salvador — “home-growns.” Trump told Bukele he will need to build five more of his mega-prison concentration camps to accommodate those American citizens. If we’ve learned anything about Trump, it’s that when he says it, he means it & he will do it. Trump is sending a signal to every single American that if you oppose him, he can just snatch you off the street and send you to El Salvador with no due process & forever.

“This is a five-alarm fire. We must stop these psychopaths.”
