Senator Scott Wiener’s Statement on ICE Activity Involving Family at SFO: “More Air Travel Disruptions Are Coming Thanks To Trump and ICE”

Viral video of ICE brutally detaining a woman and child at San Francisco International Airport is a preview of ICE’s new expansion to airports across the country.

San Francisco — California State Senator Scott Wiener — author of the No Kings Act to allow people to more easily sue ICE agents, as well as California’s law banning ICE from wearing face masks — today issued the following statement regarding a widely circulated online video showing federal agents brutally detaining a mother in front of what appeared to be her young child and travelers at San Francisco International Airport (SFO):

“First and foremost: ICE needs to get the hell out of San Francisco and San Francisco International Airport.

“What we saw last night —  federal agents terrorizing a woman and child — is cruel and unacceptable. This kid experienced the same trauma as Liam Cornejo, who was deported from Minneapolis in a bunny hat. The fear and chaos these despicable actions cause have a profound human cost.

“I want to be clear: I’m told this was not a broad ICE operation at SFO. ICE brought this woman and her child to the airport, or otherwise detained her there, as part of Donald Trump’s mass deportation campaign — a campaign that is tearing apart communities, terrorizing families, and even deporting young children.

“But across the country, Donald Trump IS sending untrained, violent ICE agents to airports to expand their terror campaign. He is holding funding for TSA hostage in Congress in an attempt to force through more spending on ICE. These are not TSA officers. They are not trained for airport security. Their presence will make situations more volatile and more frightening for travelers.

“More air travel disruptions are coming thanks to Trump and ICE. Traveling is already incredibly stressful right now thanks to accidents caused by DOGE and Trump dysfunction in Washington. Yesterday’s incident at SFO shows that this brutal expansion of ICE activity into airports will only bring more chaos, stress, and trauma to millions of people just trying to get through an airport.

“People in San Francisco and across the country are right to be angry. That’s why I’m speaking out today: ICE is not welcome in San Francisco or at SFO. Get out.”
