Senator Wiener’s Statement on Court Ruling that LGBT People Are Protected by Federal Civil Rights Laws

February 26, 2018

Sacramento –  Today, Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) released the following statement after a United States Federal Appeals Court in New York ruled that LGBT people are protected from discrimination under the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The Trump Administration argues to the contrary:

“The march forward for civil rights continues with this ruling that LGBT people are protected by federal civil rights laws. We will continue to fight for justice for *all* people, not just the subset that Trump views as real Americans. We‘ll have to work hard to protect this gain for LGBT civil rights, as Trump is packing the courts - including the Supreme Court - with zealots who believe laws protecting LGBT people violate ‘freedom of religion.’ But your religious beliefs don’t give you a right to discriminate. This is a proud day in America.”
